Most of us know that Gordon hails from Deptford and from Gordon's concert chat we've discovered that Spike Milligan and Val Doonican were also denizens of that green and pleasant land...
... I was watching a very enjoyable documentary about Mark Knopfler on BBC4 on Friday pm. During the 'life-story' bit he said that he'd spent a while living in Deptford in the late '70s (I think).
So yet another guitar maestro with links to that idyllic spot where even the coal-bunkers are thatched.

Deptford... the Musical Powerhouse...
The older I get, the better I used to be
Re: Deptford... the Musical Powerhouse...
Hi Mike.
Yes indeed Mark formed Dire Straits in Deptford. He was living in the flats at the bottom of Church Street, where at that time they were let out to students and folk generally.
I remember giving guitar Lessons to a guy from Deptford who was raving about this guitar player called Mark in a local band....If only I had gone down there!!!!!!
Thanks for the posting sir.
Be Well.

Hmmm......not quite the same, but I remember when REM played at Birmingham University in 1984 for £2 a ticket. I knew about the gig, but did I go - NO
Best to you both Gordon and Mike,
Roger

Ah Deptford, the Nashville of England - we have a decent local drummer called Terry hailing from there. Waxes lyrical about his fishing village on the Thames. Can't imagine why he decided to slum it on te Dorset coast.
Nothing can possibly go wrong...

Never heard it called that before! Many things but certainly not that...
