Here's a weird one...In the studio yesterday we were trying to record some electric rhythm tracks by micing up a valve amp cab. For some reason we kept getting a nasty clipping noise on the attack of every chord. You couldn't hear it from the speaker, only on the monitors or headphones. We tried several guitars and it turned out it was worse the older the strings. It didn't happen at all with new strings, but the older they were, the nastier the clipping. Any idea why this should happen? Old strings usually just sound dull...what is it that happens with age that makes them do this? Could they become magnetised above the pick-up poles?
Answers on a postcard.......
