The Coopers Arms 27 / 09 / 2018 - with Nick Hooper

The tally was into double figures. From the bar of the Cromwell suite to the function room was a small step – perhaps three inches – and although marked, it caused some attendees to trip and lurch into the area: an unfortunate and cruel distraction.

The Coopers Arms, Weston on Trent is situated in Weston Hall - a listed 17th century manor house with a fascinating story for those with even a passing interest in English history. It is an imposing and distinctive building – now serving as an upmarket eatery, function venue, and fishing site. Mr.Giltrap plays in some wonderful places.

The room itself had timber beams, a large feature fireplace and the walls were adorned with mirrors – which lightened and enlarged the space.

Fiona and I arrived in good time as is our custom, and spent an enjoyable forty-five minutes or so chatting with both Hilary and Karen and Malc Welch in the vestibule to the Cromwell suite.

We had seen Gordon and Nick perform brilliantly together previously at Bishops Itchington, and the format of this evening’s concert was similar – each performer played both solo pieces from their repertoire and supported the other to create rich, melodic arrangements that lifted individual opuses. Their onstage rapport has become even warmer and more intimate as the friends become more comfortable playing together and compliments flowed regarding each’s compositional skills and technical dexterities.

The second set had a particular Irish texture to it, with contributions from both players celebrating the rich musical traditions of the Emerald Isle. Nick admitted to being a Cornishman which, as Gordon - with county Cork roots suggested - contradicts the theory that you need Celtic blood flowing through your veins to produce beautiful Irish airs.

A transfixed and appreciative audience of about eighty listened attentively throughout, but all too soon the evening’s experience advanced to its conclusion. The magic musical spell woven by Gordon Giltrap and Nick Hooper - two friends in concert - was broken…………………………………until the next time.
