Whimple

Aiming to come and see what's happening at Whimple on Sunday. A bunch of saxophone players seems to be coming too. Looking forward to a great evening.

Will the Whombles be there?

Stuff of Nightmares

Ouch. For the first time in 42 years I've done some serious damage to a guitar - my unique Alvin Davies resonator: http://www.jongarvey.co.uk/images/pacific.jpg I was doing some recording with it last Tuesday, stooped to switch on the recorder, and the strap became detached. It only fell a couple of...

Re: Acoustic Amp

Hi

I've had the older AS80R for many years and it's done great service.

It's hard to believe what a short time he spent in the Shadows. I still think of him as their bass player.

Great Scott, wot a memory! I remembered my hero playing the thing publicly several times - you remembered from one brief trip to pick up the doubleneck. Rispeck. Though there is a piccy on my website, I suppose... But yes, I'm very impressed with Jap Epiphone quality. I inherited a similar 6 string ...

The older the strings, the more likely they are to be haunted. I would have the amp exorcised, rub the strings in garlic and that should solve it.

Or maybe just new strings.

That nudged my memory again ... ahh yes, the Mr Odell who's credited on the "Giltrap" album. Well, it was certainly a pretty guitar, and I remember it sounded good when I heard it on several occasions - but that might have had something to do with the player. But it was the combination tha...

Gordon's 12-string

Gordon, I was reminiscing yesterday and thought of the 12-string you had back in the early 70s, with some black chequered inlay on the face. It may have been a John Bailey but I'm not sure. I remember offering to buy it from you at a gig at Surrey Uni in March '73, though actually I didn't have any ...

Are you sure the mic imput gain gain isn't set too high? There's a fair bit more welly coming from a guitar amp than from a voice or acoustic.

"I'm sure you and I can't be doing with this snob capo nonsense." You guessed it - I'll do whatever it takes to get the sound right - and I cheat even worse when I'm recording. To try and redeem my sax-playing foot-in-mouth friend, he was talking at the time about a local rock band he men...

I guess Paco De Lucia must be a lesser guitarist... :D Ah - he's cheating by playing jazz when he ought to be playing flamenco. Mind you, my "old pro" cheated the same by sessioning on Pink Floyd and Genesis records when he should have been playing jazz. Actually he was just wrong ...

I was due to play and sing at our church carol service this evening, but a after a trial run in the Mini it took me five goes before I (barely) made it back up the hill to our isolated house. Clearly a no-no in the dark with the family aboard. Nevertheless, decided the show must go on, and resolved ...

You and I know that using a capo is NOT a cheat when used in a CREATIVE way. I used Jim Dunlops for decades until a singer-songwriter friend said I was hopelessly old-fashioned and gave me a sHubb for Christmas. I now play a lot of sax, and was conversing with an old pro a week or two ago, who was ...

The worst of it was I had the thing re-fretted. You'd have thought the tech would have said something to me before he charged me double, wouldn't you? I just put it down to experience in the end. At least I never had it nicked, unlike Gary Davis who, being blind, was always having his J200s purloine...
