Re: All my friends who bought Ravens and Lullabies

Added my review a few weeks ago (mentions Stephen Wilsons release with 'Raven' in the title, the same month). Thoroughly enjoyed R&L and play it long after the purchase. It has lots of highlights but 'Is This the Last Song' is going to be a long-time favourite for myself. As of today there are 1...

3 recent acquisitions

I've switched almost entirely from electric to acoustic in recent months, with just one more electric to sell, which might be going next week. My Blackstar amp has been sold, together with a big pedal-board. In their place are my 'precious' in the image link below. My GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome...

Re: Classic rock present Prog

And a great review of Ravens & Lullabies in the CD review pages. And brief news of a big venue tour by yourself and Oliver with...but you haven't announced that here so I will leave that for you when it is finalised! Nice to see you really are comfortably-regarded as a progressive artist. Prog i...

Re: What do people on the fourm think of Elixirs?

I absolutely don't like the sound of old or worn-out strings. But likewise for brand-new strings. Too much metal, not enough guitar. After being played-in the tone sounds more guitar and less string (to me). I have a terrible habit of playing with a thumb-pick, but only on US-written pieces. I've be...

Re: VIntage. GG Deluxe

I'm saving pound coins in a jamjar (though I get regularly robbed for parking change and swimming-pool locker usage!) Nonetheless with Xmas pennies I'm nearly a 1/3rd of the way saved-up for a Deluxe! I'm selling my accumulated collection of NOS (New Old Stock) electron valves for hi-fi's and guitar...

Re: What do people on the fourm think of Elixirs?

I get the .11-054's. Over Xmas I replaced the Elixirs on my new Orsino with Newtones. No way around it for four days the guitar sounded awful to my ears. The first two days down to the 'bright'-sounding tone that new strings always provide - that 'you've just changed those strings' sound that no bra...

Re: Mandolin Pick-ups?

I have a mandolin but if I fitted a decent pick-up it would probably cost me more than the value of the instrument! Headway make a British-made mandolin pick-up; http://www.headwaymusicaudio.com/product_HE4mfeq_acoustic_pickup.php and a cheaper 'Snake' variety; http://www.headwaymusicaudio.com/produ...

Re: What do people on the fourm think of Elixirs?

I hate changing strings - not because of the process involved, but rather because I don't like the initial sound of new strings. I use the Elixir nanowebs and normally buy them in a three-pack from Rich Tone Music in Sheffield ( http://www.richtonemusic.co.uk/products/elixir_e16502_phoshpor_bronze_1...

Re: VIntage. GG Deluxe

There's a pic and spec on the JHS website at http://www.jhs.co.uk/gordongiltrap.html , go down the page to the VE2000DLX. The front is solid cedar and the back solid Rosewood with an ebony fingerboard on a mahogany neck. If that's not high enough a spec' (with the Grover tuners and fitted hard case)...

Re: What steel string guitars to consider?

And to yourself Trevor and Mrs Trevor! Your advice was invaluable. I worked from home today - silly thing to do! The guitar drew me in and I ended-up playing for an hour in the morning and then at noon and ended-up having to work late to catch-up. As the strings lose their zing it gets better. I pla...

Re: What steel string guitars to consider?

I thoroughly enjoyed the Bramall Hall gig on the 12th. Thank you for making it a super nights entertainment. I hadn't seen you at that venue for many years - work abroad and other committments have reduced such opportunities to a minimum. Although it had been my birthday the day before (hence the Fy...

Re: Pick-ups for Nylon-string Guitars

I've just purchased a Bartlett 'The Guitar Mic' ( http://www.bartlettmics.com/guitarmic.html ) after trying-out quite a few pickups of various types, and deciding I definately wanted a real mic in the mix for live playing, rather than a transducer or piezo. Gordon's signature Vintage electro models ...

Re: What steel string guitars to consider?

I really can sympathise about trying out and buying guitars..... :( Personally, for what it's worth, I like the Grand Auditorium/Baby Jumbo size for fingerstyle as well having as a cutaway. I have a Taylor 214CE which I can highly recommend. Also I have tried these (smaller bodies/cutaways): Crafte...
