Re: Guitar of the Month - John Bailey Double Neck

I think I mentioned here a few years ago that I did a web-page on the Bailey Doubleneck, which may be found here: http://www.jongarvey.co.uk/doubleneck.html . Afficianados should note there's a second page there on the technical aspects of the guitar, and a third on its history. It looks from Gordon...

Gordon in the Library of Congress

I don't know if anyone else has noticed that Larry Norman's second album, Only Visiting This Planet , was one of only 25 recordings from the entire history of recording to be put on the registry of the US Library of Congess in 2013. The citation said: “Only Visiting This Planet” (album)—Larry Norman...

Re: Announcement Sept 2015

Just visited for the first time in a while - bad news. Our prayers go with you for successful treatment in the coming months (and, we hope, a return to playing in due course)

Much love to you and Hilary

Re: Acoustic partial capo column

My friend (another Gordon) was using a partial capo he made himself in 1972. Is that a first?

Re: Telecasters

Hi Gordon You're an unreformed Townshend clone after all! I didn't mention that in another band I also have to put an EWI through the amp, which means using a clean acoustic amp rather than the VM. We're also doing covers of Pretenders, Genesis and other FX-laden bands, so the pedal board takes over...

Re: Telecasters

Roger I've been trying in the last year or two to use electrics the "old way" that you describe - using minimal effects and the guitar controls. It's through necessity, as I mainly play sax in that particular band, and with two guitars to pick up at short notice in different tunings as wel...

Late returners at Sidmouth

I can't get to Sidmouth Folk Festival this year, though I wish I could as two long-absent people are there. Nic Jones apparently played yesterday with his son and a couple of others. One of the best "trad" guitar players, seriously injured in a car crash after a gig a few years after we bo...

Re: Telecasters

Roger - Quite right re Nucleus. It was late '69 or early '70, I think. At Guildford Civic Hall - just a few months before I first saw Gordon on the same bill as a very young John Martyn. Again a very simple setup - his only effect was a bottleneck - memory says two bottlenecks but that seems unlikel...

Re: Telecasters

PS - should have included jazzers:

Bill Frizell (whom I saw in New York a year or two before his death)
Mike Stern
Chris Spedding (once saw him do a trio with John Williams and Paco Pena, but it was in Guildford and some of the audience objected to the sacrilege!)

Re: Telecasters

Names not on above lists, and maybesome more unexpected: "Habitual" Telecasterers: Hugh Cornwell Prince (famous for a Hohner copy) Robyn Hitchcock "Sometimes" Telecasterers Martin Carthy (a nice blue one in Steeleye - unimistakeable sound) Kimberley Rew (a Cambridge contemporary ...

Re: Sociology teacher from Norwich City College (early ninet

Ah well, if we're hunting guitarists, I'd love to find out what happened to Mike Robertson, who played mean ragtime and piedmont on a clapped out sunburst Eko. He left Cambridge to play professionally in Holland or somewhere around 1972 and the last I heard was one postcard from there.

Re: Deptford... the Musical Powerhouse...

Ah Deptford, the Nashville of England - we have a decent local drummer called Terry hailing from there. Waxes lyrical about his fishing village on the Thames. Can't imagine why he decided to slum it on te Dorset coast.

Re: The John Bailey Doubleneck

Anyone remember the "Play guitar like Chet Atkins" ads in Superman comics? Not that any of us had heard of Chet Atkins. But the ad was directed at people "who can't tell a guitar pick from a shovel."

Looks like Kay should have got the Bert Weedon book instead.

Re: Gasworks

I always rate Mike Draper as the finest phonofiddle player on the contemporary folk-rock scene. I must say that would be a double-bill to conjure with, too - John Brown introductions followed by Gordon Giltrap introductions... there wouldn't be any need for music at all. My favourite one liner (as a...
