NICK HOOPER
Although Nick Hooper is better known as a film-music composer, he started his musical career as a guitarist, studying at The Royal College of Music, and receiving tuition from John Williams and others.
In the late 70s he toured widely under the auspices of Yehudi Menuhin’s Live Music Now, and also The British Council. In the 1980s Nick released a folk album Turning Tables with Chris Leslie, and a solo album of music by J S Bach which was critically acclaimed, comparing his playing to that of John Williams and Andres Segovia.
Decades later, after a successful film music career, scoring two Harry potter films and winning many awards, Nick has returned to his first love – the guitar. He joined forces with his wife Judith to form the duo Henderson:Hooper, started a folk series which has now become ‘Pop-up Folk’, and helped form the Dellywellyboot Band. A couple of years ago Nick recorded an album of mainly Irish music Six Strings, and it was this that caused him to meet Gordon Giltrap: Gordon generously helped him to get his new Fylde guitar – a copy of Gordon’s.
Of Six Strings: ‘It’s a complete joy. It’s going to be one of those albums that I play a lot, because it’s got that kind of calm spaciousness about it too, which is absolutely brilliant. Yeah, love it!’ Chris Leslie
Gordon and Nick will be joined by fiddler Judith Henderson (Hooper) as a guest on this occasion. Nick and Judith have recently recorded an album of their duo Henderson:Hooper at Real World Studios, to be released during 2018.
