Sharing Day

On Saturday August 26th I'm holding another "Sharing Day" in Mere Green, Sutton Coldfield at the same venue as last time, at the rear of St James Hall opposite Sainsbury's.

The plan is for a relatively short morning recital from yours truly and then a look at the chosen piece for the day THE LAST OF ENGLAND, the title track of the new album. This is a fairly accessible piece aimed at the intermediate player, so should hopefully appeal to most players of a reasonable standard.

During the remainder of the day I shall be on hand to ask any questions about technique, equipment, composition, performance, you name it!

My special guest for the afternoon is the superb builder of bespoke electric guitars Michael Gough of MG GUITARS. He creates the most beautiful instruments from the best materials available. Michael will also be on hand to discuss guitar set ups and give you an insight into how he does it. Apart from being a gifted builder Michael is also a very fine guitarist and composer and will be more than happy to share his knowledge with you. He's a lovely chap and good friend.

The cost for the day is £100.

Free tea and coffee will be available and food can bought from good old Sainsbury's located two minutes’ walk from the venue. There is also disabled access.

There is ample parking at the hall and for those travelling a distance wishing to travel the night before or stop over after the event, there is a Travelodge not too far away on Chester Road and numerous other places to stay close by. You will need to arrange your own accommodation.

For information and bookings please contact my good friend and webmaster Sue Holton by email on ggiltrap+sharingday@gmail.com

I'm SO looking forward to meeting all you pickers out there and sharing all I know and have learnt over my many years in this crazy music business

I look forward to hearing from you.

G.

The Stables
is situated in a beautiful rural setting in Wavendon, just to the south east of Milton Keynes and a short drive from central Milton Keynes.

Wavendon Allmusic Plan Ltd (WAP), a registered charity, was founded in 1969 by the world-renowned jazz musicians Dame Cleo Laine and Sir John Dankworth, with an aim to provide a centre of musical activity which would break down barriers between music genres and introduce music to as many people as possible regardless of age or social background.

The vision was realised with the development of The Stables Theatre, in some outbuildings at their home, as a venue for concerts and education activities. In October 2000, the new Stables Theatre opened its doors on a 398 seat auditorium which now presents over 200 concerts and over 200 education sessions each year.

A handling charge of £2.80 applies to all bookings. Online bookings are also subject to a £1.80 per ticket processing fee.

Fairkytes was a private house originally built in the mid 18th century with several later additions to the property made up to the end of the 19th century. It is Grade II listed.

Previous occupants include Job Alibone, Joseph Fry (son of the famous prison reformer Elizabeth Fry) and Thomas Wedlake, who owned the Iron Foundry which stood opposite. In the 1950s it was bought by Hornchurch Urban District Council who used it as a library.

Fairkytes became Havering's Arts Centre in 1973 when the library moved to the purpose built building in North Street. Over time the centre has grown considerably, incorporating the Annexe building at the rear in 1992 and the Billet building next door in 2001.

TWO FRIENDS SHARING MUSIC

Plenty of solos from Gordon and Nick, as well as some duos.

NICK HOOPER

Although Nick Hooper is better known as a film-music composer, he started his musical career as a guitarist, studying at The Royal College of Music, and receiving tuition from John Williams and others.

In the late 70s he toured widely under the auspices of Yehudi Menuhin’s Live Music Now, and also The British Council. In the 1980s Nick released a folk album Turning Tables with Chris Leslie, and a solo album of music by J S Bach which was critically acclaimed, comparing his playing to that of John Williams and Andres Segovia.

Decades later, after a successful film music career, scoring two Harry potter films and winning many awards, Nick has returned to his first love – the guitar. He joined forces with his wife Judith to form the duo Henderson:Hooper, started a folk series which has now become ‘Pop-up Folk’, and helped form the Dellywellyboot Band. A couple of years ago Nick recorded an album of mainly Irish music Six Strings, and it was this that caused him to meet Gordon Giltrap: Gordon generously helped him to get his new Fylde guitar – a copy of Gordon’s.

Of Six Strings: ‘It’s a complete joy. It’s going to be one of those albums that I play a lot, because it’s got that kind of calm spaciousness about it too, which is absolutely brilliant. Yeah, love it!’ Chris Leslie

Bramall Hall is a superb example of a 'Cheshire Black and White' timber framed manor house, with origins dating back to Medieval England. The property is lovingly cared for and presents the visitor with a marvellous historic record spanning six centuries.

Journeying through the house will give you a glimpse into Bramall Hall's fascinating history - beautiful Tudor rooms with spectacular plaster ceilings, a wonderful 16th century embroidered table carpet and wall paintings, plus many fine examples of architecture, furniture and paintings from different periods.

The house is set in 70 acres of beautiful parkland which has been landscaped in the style of Capability Brown. The park features two lakes, woodland walks, gardens and a toddlers play area.

As Hilary says "One of our fave venues, it's great that Christmas is up and running when we go there because it is LOVELY."

Entrance to the hall is from the side away from the car park.
