Golden Valley Walking and Arts Festival

Welcome to the Golden Valley Walking and Arts Festival.

The Golden Valley lies between the Black Mountains of Wales, and the Wye Valley in the West of Herefordshire, England. A haven of peace and tranquility, the deeply rural and borderline location is steeped is history and boasts extraordinary beauty.

The Valley has its name thanks to the River Dore and the invading Normans who mistook the word D’or to mean Golden. The river was actually called Dwr, the Welsh word for water.

However the name remained and describes this area aptly with its glorious and unspoiled beauty.

The churches, castles and chapels of the area are central to its history and base the theme of all the walks organised for this event. From the former monastery Dore Abbey to the chapels and castles of Longtown, Kilpeck and Dorstone, we have strived to capture the very essence of the Valley and its countryside.

The dates for the walks fall over the Eastertide and this makes it a very special opportunity indeed. For example, St Peters at Peterchurch is one of a small number of churches housing art exhibitions from the Methodist Art Collection depicting The Passion of Christ and related work. It will also play host to a very special concert of music with world renowned guitarist Gordon Giltrap headlining some choral delights from local choirs.

We have chosen walks that both border and run right through the Valley. The aim is to give the best possible experience for the walker with views and vistas to take your breath away.

We are so looking forward to sharing this area of pure Gold to you and promise a memory that will only provide you reason to return.
